What is Pilates

“Pilates is the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.”  –  Joseph Pilates

Pilates MethodThe Pilates method provides fitness training for the thinking body.

Joseph H. Pilates created this system of movement based upon his principles of whole body health, whole body commitment, and breath. He brought this ground breaking technique to North America over 80 years ago. Together with his wife, Clara Pilates, he continued to develop a system of movement which he called “Contrology”. It is now known as the Pilates method and is recognized worldwide as a leading fitness and rehabilitation tool.

The Pilates method can benefit everyone, regardless of age, body type, physical history or previous experience. Pilates programs can be designed for:

• General physical conditioning

• Correction of postural habits

• Action specific training (sports, dance, occupational, etc.)

• Pre and post natal conditioning

• Rehabilitation from chronic or traumatic injuries

• Injury prevention through improved bio-mechanical function

Pilates exercises use precise movement sequences to develop stability and mobility throughout the body. The simultaneous physical and mental challenges are effective for improving:

• Strength

• Flexibility

• Alignment

• Mobility

• Awareness

The key to getting the maximum benefit from Pilates exercise lies in the proper execution of the exercises, under the guidance of a knowledgeable teacher. Consistent Pilates practice develops healthy movement habits for life, improving the quality of life through a dynamic relationship with the body, mind and spirit.

"The art of contrology proves that the only real guide to your true age lies not in years or how you THINK you feel but as you ACTUALLY are as infallibly indicated by the degree of natural and normal flexibility enjoyed by your spine throughout life."  Joseph Pilates
